Essential Ingredients for French Dip Egg Rolls

To craft these extraordinary French Dip Egg Rolls, you’ll need a selection of simple yet impactful ingredients that come together to create a symphony of flavor. The heart of the filling relies on tender, savory components, while the dipping sauce brings it all together with a rich, umami punch.

  • Caramelized onions: Approximately 1 cup. These sweet, slow-cooked onions are crucial for that signature French dip flavor.
  • Egg roll wrappers: You’ll need about 10 wrappers to make a standard batch. Choose fresh, pliable wrappers for the best results.
  • Deli roast beef: Around 10 slices. Opt for high-quality, thinly sliced deli roast beef that’s flavorful and tender.
  • Provolone cheese: About 20 slices (two slices per egg roll). Provolone melts beautifully and adds a creamy, slightly tangy counterpoint to the beef and onions.
  • Vegetable oil: Enough for frying, typically about 1 inch in a large pan.
  • Dried minced onion: 1 teaspoon. Enhances the onion flavor in the au jus.
  • Garlic powder: ½ teaspoon. Adds a subtle aromatic depth to the dipping sauce.
  • Beef broth: 2 cups. The foundation of your rich and savory au jus. Choose a good quality beef broth for optimal flavor.
  • Worcestershire sauce: 2 teaspoons. Provides a complex, umami-rich kick to the au jus.
  • Fresh parsley: For garnish, adding a touch of color and freshness.

Crafting Your French Dip Egg Rolls: Step-by-Step Guide

Creating these delightful French Dip Egg Rolls is a simple process that yields incredibly satisfying results. Follow these steps for perfectly crispy, flavor-packed bites:

  • Step One: Prepare the Wrappers and Filling Base. Begin by laying an egg roll wrapper on a clean, dry surface, orienting it in a diamond shape with one corner pointing towards you. This orientation makes rolling easier. Place two slices of provolone cheese near the center of the wrapper, slightly overlapping if necessary. Top the cheese with a single slice of deli roast beef. Ensure the filling is centered to allow for proper folding.
  • Step Two: Add the Caramelized Onions. Next, spoon a generous tablespoon of your sweet, slow-cooked caramelized onions directly over the roast beef and cheese. The onions are key to that authentic French dip flavor, so don’t skimp! Distribute them evenly over the meat for balanced flavor in every bite.
  • Step Three: Moisten the Edges for Sealing. Lightly dip your finger in a small bowl of water and moisten all four edges of the egg roll wrapper. This creates a sticky surface that will ensure a secure seal, preventing the filling from escaping during frying and ensuring a crisp finish.
  • Step Four: Fold and Roll the Egg Rolls. Carefully fold the bottom corner of the diamond over the filling and tuck it in snugly. Then, fold in the left and right corners towards the center, creating an envelope shape. Finally, tightly roll the egg roll upwards from the bottom, ensuring all edges are sealed. Repeat this process with the remaining wrappers and filling until all your egg rolls are assembled.

  • Step Five: Heat the Frying Oil. In a large, deep frying pan or a Dutch oven, pour about 1 inch of vegetable oil. Place the pan over medium heat. Allow the oil to heat thoroughly to approximately 350-375°F (175-190°C). A consistent oil temperature is essential for even cooking and a golden-brown, crispy exterior. You can test the oil by dropping a tiny piece of wrapper into it; it should sizzle immediately.
  • Step Six: Fry the Egg Rolls to Golden Perfection. Carefully place the assembled egg rolls into the hot oil, seam-side down first, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Overcrowding can lower the oil temperature, leading to greasy, soggy egg rolls. Fry for approximately 1 minute per side, or until each egg roll achieves a beautiful golden-brown color and a satisfyingly crispy texture.
  • Step Seven: Drain Excess Oil. Once fried to perfection, use tongs to carefully remove the egg rolls from the hot oil. Transfer them immediately to a wire rack placed over a paper towel-lined baking sheet or directly onto a paper towel-lined tray. This allows any excess oil to drain off, ensuring maximum crispiness and a less greasy final product.
  • Step Eight: Prepare the Au Jus Dipping Sauce. While the egg rolls are draining, prepare your savory au jus. In a microwave-safe bowl or a small saucepan, combine the beef broth, dried minced onion, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Heat gently until warmed through and the flavors have melded. This dipping sauce is the quintessential accompaniment for your French Dip Egg Rolls.
  • Step Nine: Garnish for Freshness. Once the egg rolls are ready and the au jus is warm, sprinkle a generous amount of fresh, chopped parsley over the dipping sauce or directly on the served egg rolls. This adds a vibrant pop of color and a fresh herbal note that brightens the rich flavors.
  • Step Ten: Serve and Enjoy! Arrange the crispy French Dip Egg Rolls on a serving platter alongside individual small bowls of the warm au jus dipping sauce. Encourage your guests or family to dip generously and savor the unique blend of flavors and textures. These are best enjoyed warm, fresh from the pan.

Essential Equipment for Success

Having the right tools on hand can make the preparation of your French Dip Egg Rolls even smoother and more enjoyable. Here’s a list of key equipment:

  • Large Skillet: A deep frying pan or Dutch oven is essential for safely frying the egg rolls, ensuring ample space for the oil and even cooking.
  • Paper towels or Wire Rack: Crucial for draining excess oil from the freshly fried egg rolls, keeping them crispy.
  • Small Saucepan: Perfect for gently warming the beef broth and other ingredients for the flavorful au jus dipping sauce.
  • Spatula: Useful for handling ingredients and safely moving egg rolls.
  • Tongs: Indispensable for turning the egg rolls in hot oil and transferring them to the draining rack with ease and safety.

Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with French Dip Egg Rolls

While French Dip Egg Rolls are undeniably delicious on their own, pairing them with the right accompaniments can elevate them from a simple snack to a complete, unforgettable meal. Whether you’re aiming for a lavish appetizer spread or a hearty dinner, these versatile rolls complement a wide array of dishes.

  • Cucumber Salad: The crisp, refreshing notes of a cucumber salad provide a wonderful counterpoint to the rich, savory flavors of the egg rolls, offering a palate-cleansing balance.
  • Broccoli Salad: A creamy, tangy broccoli salad with bacon bits and a sweet dressing can add a vibrant texture and flavor contrast that complements the warmth of the egg rolls beautifully.
  • Bacon Wrapped Appetizers: If you’re building an appetizer spread, more savory, meaty bites like bacon-wrapped dates or shrimp can create a cohesive and indulgent theme.
  • Air Fryer Crab Cakes: For a more upscale appetizer duo, light and flaky crab cakes offer a delicate seafood option that pairs well without overpowering the beefy egg rolls.
  • Spicy Butter Chicken Wings: For game day or a casual feast, the bold, zesty kick of chicken wings provides an exciting contrast and adds another layer of flavor for a truly satisfying spread.

Consider also serving them alongside a simple green salad with a vinaigrette for a lighter meal, or with a creamy potato soup for a comforting winter dinner. The key is to choose sides that either complement their rich flavors or offer a refreshing contrast.

Creative Variations and Flavorful Substitutions

One of the joys of cooking is the freedom to experiment and customize recipes to suit your personal taste or dietary needs. These French Dip Egg Rolls are incredibly adaptable, offering numerous possibilities for delicious variations and substitutions:

  • Explore Diverse Cheese Options: While provolone is a classic choice for its melt and mild flavor, don’t hesitate to experiment with other cheese varieties. Swiss cheese, with its nutty and slightly sweet notes, offers a more traditional “French” flavor. Mozzarella can provide an even gooier melt, while a blend of Monterey Jack and cheddar could add a sharper, more complex profile. For an extra kick, a touch of pepper jack could introduce a subtle heat.
  • Infuse a Spicy Kick: If you’re a fan of heat, it’s easy to spice up these egg rolls. Consider adding finely sliced jalapeños or serrano peppers directly into the filling for a fresh, vibrant heat. A dash of your favorite hot sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes mixed with the caramelized onions can also introduce a delightful warmth that complements the savory beef.
  • Alternate Protein Choices: Not a fan of roast beef, or simply looking for a new twist? These egg rolls are highly versatile when it comes to protein. Shredded cooked chicken or turkey can make for a lighter alternative, especially when seasoned with poultry-friendly herbs. For a unique flavor profile, consider using thinly sliced prime rib leftovers. Vegetarians can rejoice too; sautéed mushrooms, perhaps mixed with a bit of plant-based cheese, can create a savory and satisfying filling that captures the essence of umami.
  • Baking or Air Frying Alternative: For a healthier option or if you prefer to avoid deep frying, these egg rolls can be baked or air-fried. Baking will result in a slightly less crispy exterior but still delicious. Air frying provides a fantastic crunch with significantly less oil. Adjust cooking times accordingly until golden brown and heated through.
  • Different Dipping Sauces: While au jus is traditional, consider serving with a creamy horseradish sauce for a pungent kick, or a savory onion dip for an extra layer of flavor.

Storage Instructions for Leftovers

It’s a rare occurrence to have leftovers of this incredibly easy and delicious recipe, as they tend to be gobbled up almost immediately! However, should you find yourself with a few extra French Dip Egg Rolls, proper storage will ensure they remain fresh and tasty for later enjoyment. Place any cooled egg rolls in an airtight container. They can then be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To maintain their crispy texture, it’s best to reheat them rather than eating them cold.

Can I Freeze French Dip Egg Rolls?

Absolutely! Freezing these French Dip Egg Rolls is an excellent way to prepare them in advance and have a delicious snack or appetizer ready whenever you need it. After cooking, allow the egg rolls to cool completely to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer them to a freezer-safe, airtight container or a heavy-duty Ziploc freezer bag. To prevent them from sticking together, you can flash freeze them on a baking sheet for about an hour before transferring them to the container. They can be stored in the freezer for a maximum of 3 months without compromising their quality. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply place the frozen egg rolls directly into an air fryer or preheated oven and cook until thoroughly heated through and delightfully crispy.

Pro Tips and Clever Tricks for Perfect Egg Rolls

Achieving perfectly crispy and flavorful French Dip Egg Rolls is easier than you think, especially with a few expert tips. These small adjustments can make a big difference in the final outcome, ensuring every bite is as delicious as possible:

  • Maintain Wrapper Moisture: Egg roll wrappers can dry out quickly when exposed to air, making them brittle and prone to tearing. To prevent this, always keep your stack of wrappers covered with a slightly damp cloth while you are assembling the egg rolls. This simple step ensures they remain pliable and easy to work with, leading to perfectly rolled and sealed creations.
  • Ensure a Secure Seal: A well-sealed egg roll is a happy egg roll! To prevent the delicious filling from unraveling or escaping during the cooking process, ensure a secure seal. After placing the filling and folding the first corner, use a finger dipped in water to lightly moisten all remaining edges of the wrapper. This creates a strong adhesive bond as you roll, ensuring your egg rolls stay intact and crispy from start to finish.
  • Consistent Oil Temperature for Even Frying: The key to golden-brown, evenly cooked egg rolls is maintaining a consistent oil temperature. If your oil is too cool, the egg rolls will absorb too much oil and become greasy. If it’s too hot, they’ll brown too quickly on the outside, leaving the inside uncooked. Ideally, use a cooking thermometer to monitor the oil’s heat, aiming for 350-375°F (175-190°C). This ensures uniform cooking and that desirable crispy exterior.
  • Fry in Small Batches: Resist the temptation to overcrowd the frying pan. Frying too many egg rolls at once will drastically lower the oil’s temperature, leading to less crispy, potentially soggy results. Instead, fry them in small batches, giving each egg roll ample space to cook evenly and achieve that perfect golden crispness. This might take a little longer, but the superior texture is well worth the effort.
  • Don’t Overfill: While it’s tempting to pack as much filling as possible, overfilling can make it difficult to roll and seal the wrappers properly, increasing the chance of breakage during frying. Stick to the recommended amount of filling for easy assembly and optimal results.

Reheating Instructions for Maximum Crispness

To restore your leftover French Dip Egg Rolls to their original crispy glory, avoid the microwave! These methods will ensure a hot, crunchy exterior and a perfectly warmed interior:

Air Fryer Reheating:

  1. Preheat your air fryer to approximately 350°F (175°C).
  2. Arrange the cooled egg rolls in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring there is enough space between them for proper air circulation. Do not overcrowd the basket.
  3. Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until the egg rolls are thoroughly heated through and have regained their desired crispy texture.

Oven Reheating:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the cooled egg rolls on a baking sheet, ideally lined with parchment paper for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  3. Bake for 12-15 minutes, turning them halfway through, until the egg rolls are thoroughly heated and boast a delightful crispy exterior.

Baking Instructions for a Lighter Alternative

For those who prefer a less oily option or want to avoid deep frying, these French Dip Egg Rolls can be deliciously baked in the oven. While the texture will be slightly different from frying, they will still be incredibly flavorful and satisfying.

  1. Preheat your oven to a steady 375°F (190°C). Ensuring the oven is fully preheated is key to achieving a good crisp.
  2. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or by applying a light coating of cooking spray. This prevents the egg rolls from sticking and helps with easy cleanup.
  3. Arrange the assembled egg rolls on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Make sure to leave some space between each egg roll to allow for uniform heat circulation, which promotes even cooking and crisping.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20-25 minutes. During the baking time, make sure to flip the egg rolls halfway through (around the 10-12 minute mark). This step is crucial for achieving a golden-brown hue and an even crispiness on all sides.
  5. To ensure thorough cooking and food safety, use an instant-read thermometer to confirm that the internal temperature of the egg rolls reaches at least 165°F (74°C).
  6. Once perfectly golden brown and heated through, carefully remove the egg rolls from the oven. Allow them to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a serving platter. They will be hot and even crispier once they’ve had a moment to rest. Serve immediately with warm au jus.

Air Fryer Instructions for a Super Crispy Finish

The air fryer is a fantastic tool for achieving an extra-crispy exterior with significantly less oil, making it an excellent alternative for cooking your French Dip Egg Rolls. This method provides a satisfying crunch that rivals deep-frying.

  1. Preheat your air fryer to a temperature of 350°F (175°C). Allowing the air fryer to preheat ensures consistent cooking from the moment the egg rolls enter the basket.
  2. Arrange the assembled egg rolls in a single layer within the air fryer basket. It’s vital to ensure they are adequately spaced, as overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking and a less crispy result. You may need to cook them in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
  3. Cook the egg rolls for 8-10 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time (around 4-5 minutes), open the air fryer and flip each egg roll. This ensures that all sides are exposed to the circulating hot air, resulting in an even, golden-brown color and a uniform crispy texture.
  4. Before serving, confirm that the egg rolls have reached an internal temperature of at least 165°F (74°C) using an instant-read thermometer to guarantee they are thoroughly cooked.
  5. Once they are beautifully golden, crisp, and fully cooked, carefully remove the egg rolls from the air fryer. Let them cool briefly for a few minutes before serving with your warm au jus. They will be incredibly hot and continue to crisp slightly as they cool.
