Welcome to our ongoing home renovation journey! After years of meticulously transforming our previous residence in Nova Scotia, my husband and I embarked on a new adventure last June, moving into our current home in Ontario. While this house presented its own set of unique challenges and dated aesthetics, it thankfully wasn’t quite the extensive project our Nova Scotian home had been. Nevertheless, the past year has been a whirlwind of activity, filled with paint, dust, and countless decisions, all aimed at breathing new life into every corner. As we mark this significant milestone, I’m thrilled to share the remarkable progress we’ve made, particularly in one of the first and most personal spaces we tackled: our master bedroom. It’s a testament to vision and hard work, and what once felt like just a house, now truly feels like home.
Kicking Off Our Ontario Home Transformation: The Master Bedroom Before
Every great “after” story begins with a compelling “before,” and our master bedroom was no exception. When we first acquired the property, it was clear that the previous owner, a lovely lady transitioning to a retirement home, had cherished the house, but cosmetic updates had taken a back seat for several years. The interior reflected a bygone era, with its original finishes and a distinctly dated charm that was ripe for a modern refresh. Walking into the master bedroom for the first time presented us with a blank canvas, albeit one covered in worn carpet and walls yearning for a vibrant new hue. This was where our vision for a serene and inviting retreat truly began to take shape.
One of the immediate priorities for all the bedrooms was addressing the old carpeting. While cozy in its prime, carpet can harbor allergens and give a room a heavy, outdated feel. The decision to rip out all the existing carpeting was an easy one, paving the way for a cleaner, more contemporary foundation. Before we even officially moved into Ontario, we were incredibly fortunate to have the invaluable help of my parents, sisters, and extended family. Their support was monumental, initiating crucial tasks like carpet removal and preliminary preparations, effectively giving us a head start on what would become a comprehensive master bedroom makeover.
My mom, ever the thoughtful documentarian, captured a few “before” photos on her iPhone, giving me an early glimpse into the scope of our upcoming project. These images truly underscore the transformation we aimed to achieve in what would become our personal sanctuary.

As you can see, the room was a stark reminder of its past. It desperately needed a complete overhaul: fresh paint to brighten the space, new flooring to modernize it, and stylish curtains to frame the windows and offer privacy. Looking at these initial shots, it’s easy to identify the key areas demanding our immediate attention. Interestingly, the only element in this room that has yet to receive its full transformation is the closet – but that’s a significant project in itself, one that will undoubtedly warrant its very own dedicated blog post!

The Master Bedroom Transformation: From Dated to Dreamy
The journey from “yikes” to “wow” began with a clear vision and a series of strategic updates that completely redefined the space. Our goal was to create a master bedroom that felt both elegant and incredibly comfortable, a true escape from the demands of daily life. We wanted a design that was classic, simple, and timeless, allowing us to build a foundation that would remain beautiful for years to come. This approach guided every decision, from the choice of wall color to the texture of the flooring.
A Fresh Canvas: Paint, Flooring, and Window Treatments
One of the most impactful changes we made was to the walls. We opted for Benjamin Moore’s “Silver Fox,” a sophisticated and versatile grey that perfectly complements the natural light flooding into the room. This particular shade of grey isn’t too cool or too warm, striking a beautiful balance that creates a calming and contemporary ambiance. It provided the ideal neutral backdrop for our design choices, making the room feel larger, brighter, and infinitely more inviting. The power of paint in a home renovation cannot be overstated; it instantly refreshes and modernizes any space.
Next on the list was the flooring. After carefully considering various options, we decided to install laminate flooring throughout the bedroom. This choice was a strategic one, balancing aesthetic appeal with practical benefits. I’m a big fan of laminate because it’s incredibly easy to clean and significantly more cost-effective to install compared to traditional hardwood. While my husband, John, wasn’t initially “crazy” about laminate flooring, preferring the classic look of hardwood, I convinced him of its many merits. I assured him he’d adjust to its appearance and appreciate its durability and low maintenance, and true to my word, he did! It’s been a fantastic solution for our lifestyle, offering resilience against daily wear and tear while still providing a polished, clean look.

With the walls painted and the new flooring laid, the next step was addressing the windows. This bedroom is blessed with an abundance of gorgeous natural light, which we wanted to highlight and control effectively. We found some elegant grey curtains that perfectly matched the “Silver Fox” walls and complemented our overall design aesthetic. These curtains not only provide privacy and light filtration but also add a layer of texture and sophistication, transforming the windows into a stylish feature rather than a mere necessity. The careful coordination of paint, flooring, and window treatments truly brought our vision to life, creating a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing environment.
A Cohesive Design: Black and White Serenity
One of the advantages of having recently redecorated our master bedroom in our old home was that we already owned new furniture and bedding that fit a specific aesthetic. This made the design process for our new Ontario master bedroom remarkably smooth. I adore the timeless appeal of black and white; it’s a theme that exudes classic elegance, simplicity, and versatility. By incorporating our existing pieces into this fresh space, we were able to maintain a consistent style while allowing the new elements – the paint, flooring, and curtains – to truly shine. This approach not only saved us money but also ensured a seamless transition, making the bedroom feel familiar and comfortable from day one.

The choice of laminate flooring has truly proven its worth. Beyond its ease of cleaning and cost-effectiveness, it provides a sleek, modern foundation that enhances the clean lines of our black and white decor. Unlike carpet, laminate doesn’t trap dust or allergens, contributing to a healthier living environment. Its smooth surface also makes it incredibly simple to maintain, requiring just a quick sweep or damp mop to keep it looking pristine. This practicality aligns perfectly with our desire for a beautiful yet functional space. While John initially had reservations, he’s since come to appreciate the many benefits of this choice, finding that it not only looks great but also makes day-to-day living much simpler.

Maximizing Space and Promoting Relaxation
One notable difference between our current master bedroom and our previous one is its size. This room is a fair bit smaller, which presented an interesting design challenge. However, with careful planning and smart furniture placement, all our existing furniture fit comfortably without the space feeling cramped or cluttered. We prioritized functionality and flow, ensuring that every piece served a purpose and contributed to the room’s overall sense of tranquility. One deliberate decision we made for this smaller space was not to include a television in the master bedroom. If we were ever to consider adding one, it would definitely need to be a wall-mounted unit to preserve valuable floor space and maintain the room’s open feel.

The absence of a TV in our master bedroom has, surprisingly, been a huge positive. Instead of staying up too late watching my favorite shows, I’ve found myself embracing the simple pleasure of reading before bed. This intentional choice has transformed our bedroom into a true sanctuary dedicated to rest, relaxation, and connection. It encourages a more peaceful winding down process, free from the distractions of screens and stimulating content. I firmly believe it’s a healthier habit, promoting better sleep quality and fostering a more intimate atmosphere. It’s a design choice that prioritizes well-being, and one I highly recommend for anyone seeking to create a truly restful bedroom environment.

Light Control: Day and Night Comfort
Despite the room’s large windows, which are a definite asset for natural light during the day, our chosen curtains provide excellent light control. When closed, they effectively darken the room, creating an ideal environment for restful sleep. This eliminates the need for additional room-darkening blinds, maintaining a clean and uncluttered look while still offering maximum comfort. The ability to switch between an airy, sun-filled space and a dark, peaceful sanctuary with minimal effort is a testament to the thoughtful selection of our window treatments. It ensures the master bedroom functions perfectly for both daytime activities and nighttime repose, solidifying its role as a versatile and comfortable haven.

The End Result: A Master Bedroom That Truly Feels Like Home
Reflecting on the transformation, it’s incredible to see how far this room has come. From the dated, carpeted space we inherited to the serene, stylish sanctuary it is today, it’s a completely different room now compared to when we first took the keys. Every decision, every stroke of paint, and every piece of furniture has contributed to creating a space that is not only visually appealing but also deeply comfortable and reflective of our personal style. This master bedroom has truly become a cherished part of our home, a testament to the power of thoughtful design and dedicated renovation efforts. It’s more than just a room; it’s a personal haven where we can relax, recharge, and truly feel at ease. This is what “home” means to us.

What’s Next? Our Ongoing Home Improvement Journey
While the master bedroom has undergone a significant and satisfying transformation, our home improvement journey is far from over. There are always a few more details to perfect and exciting projects on the horizon. For instance, I have a couple of other small things I’d love to do in this room, such as replacing the old, somewhat worn doors to both the room itself and the closet. Upgrading these will instantly elevate the entire aesthetic and provide a more cohesive, modern feel. Furthermore, the closet is still awaiting its complete makeover – a project that requires careful planning to maximize storage and functionality, but one I’m incredibly excited to tackle in due course. Creating smart, organized storage solutions is key to maintaining a peaceful environment, and I’m looking forward to designing a custom closet space that meets our needs.
Another crucial upgrade involves the home’s electrical system. We are currently waiting for an electrician to come and replace some of the older two-prong outlets with modern, safer three-prong ones. This essential update is not just about aesthetics; it’s about ensuring safety and convenience for all our modern electronics. These ongoing projects are a testament to the continuous evolution of a home, and each step brings us closer to our ideal living space.
